FAQ

You are using an .it domain. Are you from Italy?

I’m from Germany. The term “IT” is frequently used to refer to Information Technology, which is what I do for a living and also as a hobby.

Where are you from?

I was born and raised in Karl-Marx-Stadt, a mid-sized town in the south of the GDR. Its name has always been Chemnitz, with the exception of the period between 1953 and 1990.

Where did you study, and what subject?

I studied Electrical Engineering in Mittweida and Aberdeen. I specialized in Telecommunications and wrote my diploma thesis about error detection in high-speed communication networks.

How come you work in IT, with a degree in Electrical Engineering?

During the last year of studies I realized that Telecommunication systems were already nothing but specialized computers, and I might as well do programming in a broader sense instead of just developing communication networks.

I spent a while attempting to write a PhD thesis about multimedia distribution in Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB) networks, and that was all software anyway. But before actually finishing the thesis I took an offer to work for IBM Research and Development.
